People stink.

I have met some really nice people in the GW. But, there is always someone who has to ruin a good time. At the Goodwill I shop at, there is a group of people that are there ALL the time. I think they take shifts gathering items. The rules are don't get in the bin while they are being placed, do they listen..NO. There has been more then once when I've been eyeballing something, they'll come up and when the GW employee isn't looking they'll snatch it out of the bin. If your not aggressive enough, they'll try to push their way in front of you if something catches their eye. I've learned to be aggressive right back.
There are alot of people at the outlet that have bad body odor. It's sometimes bad enough that I'm checking myself to make sure it's not me. I've decided they use this as a tactic to keep people away from the good stuff. Be prepared to smell funky people.
As I said in my last post, kids have no business at the outlet. First off, the place is dirty. I often see kids digging through the bins trying to get toys out. It's not uncommon to find broken glass in a bin and its very easy to get cut. I used to be nice to kids that were digging in the bins. If they were reaching for something I would help them or if they were in my way I would walk around them. Not anymore. I have money and I came to buy. If the kids are in my way, I just reach around, over, or through. If they have something in their hands, I just snatch it (just kidding). But, it is annoying to see unsupervised kids OR when parents let their young ones gum a toy that's been in the bin-yuck!
Lastly, be prepared to get a date. I'm not sure how often this happens to other people, but I can't count on one hand how many times someone has try to pick me up at the Goodwill. Usually, they'll make some comment about my looks, which I politely thank them for and tell them that my husband feels the same way. Usually they leave me alone at that point, but I have had someone ask me if I cheat on him.
Overall, the Goodwill is a good time. I think the more times you go there, the more comfortable you get with that place. There are some regular people that I see and we often have decent conversations while shopping. I absolutely love this store and I'm so glad that I gave it a second chance and went back after my initial visit. It's a junkers paradise!

I agree whole-heartedly about your GW Outlet write-ups! Our prices in Seattle are more--1.49lb for clothing, .99lb shoes/acc/toys, HB books .49, SB .29, etc. A discount for 50lbs or more(!) Funny thing, I saw a Medela breastpump and it looked good (I think no one else knew what it was) but there was still the Ew! factor, and that it was heavy...think I should've got it? No pick ups here in Seattle, thank goodness, but whatta ego boost!
Donna..ours used to have pricing like that. I think it was 1.29 for clothing and junk, glass was .79 hardback books were .50 and softback were .25. Movies were between $1.00 and $2.00. The more you bought the prices went down, so people combined items and they were divide an order up to get over the 50lbs (which was .59 lb). I would have to see the pump for me to decide personally whether I think it was worth it. If something is heavy, I go throw it up on the small scale and see how much it cost. If I can at least double my money if its a flop, then I'm usually willing to risk it.
I read your link up a couple days ago to YSM and was excited when I looked up Goodwill Outlets and found out that there was one on the other side of town. I went this afternoon. This location was exactly like you describe in the "facts" below except for the prices. At this GW Outlet (in Salem, OR) the base price is $1.59/lb - a little more than I was expecting, but I was still going to give the thing a try. After spending about half an hour digging through a couple of the book bins (wishing I had brought gloves like the guy next to me) - I took my haul of Junie B. Jones, Captain Underpants, Clifford, and a bunch of adorable Hello Kitty books and a few videos to the checkout line. Where I saw a sign reading something like: please separate out books, video tapes and all other items that are priced individually. Well, that pretty much covered everything I had selected. I looked around and around and around and couldn't find a listing of prices for books, so I flagged down an employee who was passing by. "How much for the books?" I inquired. "Paperbacks are $1 each, hardbacks are $2 each, VHS are $1 each," came the answer. Wait. What? "Even kids books?" I asked. "Even kids books," he confirmed. ?!?! So I pushed my cart back to the book bins and unloaded EVERYTHING. My fault I guess for not checking the prices beforehand, but I was really disappointed. Holding out a small amount of hope I asked the checker on the way out (who wasn't helping anyone) what the prices were on books, and she reeled off the same prices the guy had. I also saw that shoes were $3.25 per pair, and that glassware was cheaper than the $1.59/pound that everything else was (but I can't remember the exact amount). I wonder why in the world the prices vary so much from one location to the next? (Okay, that's all from me, thanks for letting me vent.) :-)
Yikes, your prices are a little steeper then ours. I probably would find other avenues for books, unless I came across a great one. A few weeks ago I bought what would have been a paperback book and sold it for $75. Also, don't be discouraged by the $1.59 a lb. Ours used to be a $1.29 and I still did very well. You can check to see if they go down in price when you have more weight, check to see if yours will let you go in with someone else's. Before ours changed pricing we would easily have 5-7 people per checkout. They would just divide it out and we would all pay our share seperately. It took a few times going before I would ask to go in with someone, but it was so worth it!
The closest one to us is two hours away...and if we were ever in the neighborhood, I would definitely want to check it out, but I think I would have a nervous breakdown. I almost slugged a woman who wouldn't get out of my way at Baby Gap last Sunday (forgot it was tax free weekend), so I dunno if I could handle it. Crowds make me sweat, so I'm pretty sure I would be contributing to the terrible smell.
OMG!! this post cracks me up!! You linked to the Penny Worthy Project and now here I am reading through your blog!! Thanks for coming by!
